WYSIWYG editors require you to use a special form for entering links, or switch to naked HTML mode to enter the A tag directly. Looks like you entered the A tag in WYSIWYG mode, so it thought you wanted to portray HTML so other people could see it--it rendered the angle brackets visible. Then another filter kicked in, saw the URL just sitting there, its HTML having just been neutered, and so it helpfully formatted it into a link for you. Nice hall of mirrors effect. And then a third filter kicked in to make your quotes "fancy".
Just pick one method. Since you already know the tag and your first impulse is to type it raw, switch the editor to raw mode by clicking the "HTML" tab. That's how I usually do it. I don't have the patience to popup some form and fill it out. WYSIWYG editors just slow me down.
