If the satellite can be brought to a lower orbit, the Shuttle could reach it and add an IUS to it (if there's one available, and if the Administrator agrees) and save it.
I wonder how long it would take before such a mission can take place.
But then, we are not in 1990-1992 anymore. What a great flight STS49 was: I lost a complete night of sleep just to see it live on CNN: three astronauts together in space, holding a 6 tonnes Intelsat 6 satellite!
