Satellite Photo of Moffett Field

showed some satellite photographs of Moffett field. I work at Moffett Field and it was fun seeing from Low Earth Orbit the building where I work. From the photograph I could see the parking lot where I usually park my car. Unfortunately the cars were only represented by a couple of pixels so I couldn't recognize mine. Nick Hoffman commented on what looked like six towers rising up from the aircraft hanger where they'll be keeping the Sophia flying observatory (a converted 747 with a large on-board telescope).

I didn't remember seeing six towers rising up from that building so I went over to give it a closer look. Needless to say there weren't six towers but there were six flying buttresses supporting the hanger's parabolic roof. D. Spires was closer to the mark when he speculated about "window glare". Apparently the flying buttresses were perfectly oriented to reflect the sun's light back into the satellite's camera thus saturating some of the pixels in its CCD array. The guys who interpret military recon. images must really know their stuff to make sense out of this.

Along those lines Nick Hoffman commented about the munitions bunker near the golf course. D. Spires again showed his powers of observation when he made the comment "Re: Munitions bunkers = 'radiation hazards'? X^D". This specific munitions bunker has a double fence around it which is characteristic of a particular type of munitions bunker (I will not elaborate). I should emphasize that this bunker along with most of the other buildings at Moffett Field are empty and unguarded. Moffett Field was once a major Naval base of significant strategic importance. However after conclusion of the Cold War, the Navy abandoned the place and gave it to NASA. Moffett Field is now a giant white elephant and a superfund site because of ground water methyl chloride contamination. Most of the buildings are of little use because they're contaminated with asbestos and lead. Everytime they tear down a building, they send in a crew dressed in bunny suits to haul away the toxic waste. It's rather ironic that the San Fransico Bay area has some of the most expensive real estate on the planet yet Moffett Field's property valuation is probably a negative number in the 6 digits. Not really surprising (I guess) that NASA got stuck with something like this.
