Hi P,
You know the problem with expansion is they measure it by measuring moving objects.
If I throw a quarter in one direction and a dime in the other - has the space btween them expanded or have these object simply traveled through space at various speeds?
So if a supernova is moving away from us - or coming near us - that does not really mean the universe is expanding or contracting.
Relativity plays tricks on the mind.
Space and time are illusions. Space only takes on meaning when two or more energy manifestations are compared.
The same is true with time.
Time and space are relativistic aids to comprehension of the energy around us and within us.
Infinity exists on a pinhead and in the greater cosmos.
Technically speaking - energy doesn't expand it just get's shifted around alot.
If the universe appears to be expanding in one place - somewhere else it is contracting.
If a star emits X amount of energy - that X amount of energy has been transferred from somewhere else.
If a "big Bang" forms our universe - then somewhere else an exact amount of energy must have been lost. Which means it wasn't really a big bang after all - but a balanced transfer of energy.
infinity is tiny as you can imagine or as large...
The something comes from nothing crowd - never fully grasped the energy equation and see objects like stars and planets as being "born" - one minute they are not there and the next minute they appear.
Superficially it looks as though something appeared from nothing - but just like the baby in the womb siphons off nutrients to grow - all celestial objects have to siphon off energy to make themselves manifest.
Best wishes,
