CCD imaging and computers for guiding, scanning, stacking images and a lot of work in Photoshop. Astro-Physics is giving Hubble a run for there money with this image of M42 Core with a ground based 10" telescope. There gallery also offers an image of the Eagle Nebula with a Hubble overlay for comparison. No doubt Hubble rules, but think of the cost difference.
