Yeh, I read the article

But is the water being heated to a high enough temperature to dissociate, like that or is this another effect caused partially by pressure or what? Particularly: is it something that can happen to a large volume of water in a short amount of time? Or is it a very gradual process?

Does the process lend itself to mass production techniques? E.G. dig two holes one to pump water down to where the conditions are right to split it and another to pump out the H2.

Another odd question: what's happening to the O2 produced? If it is oxydizing something, why doesn't it (re-)oxydize the H2?
