Good to hear from you, Alan - I've already added a bookmark for your new resource -
You're undoubtedly hearing the news about Rio Cuarto - it has fallen through as the site of an oblique impact.
As a result, researchers are now facing two formidable tasks. First, finding the impact source for the Argentinian glass, and second, trying to find the remains of the impactor(s) which set South America on fire in the mid-3rd millenium BCE.
One key problem both groups will face will be finding money to do this work.
Space is changing as our understanding
of it changes. Among other factors, one of the things we're seeing is the result of the pretty constant attack that ISS has been under from Mars "enthusiasts" who think that manned flight to Mars can be done way cheap and thus represents a better use of resources. My own thinking is that the impact hazard is very serious, and seriously under-estimated. Of course, I used to be way worried about terrorist attack, so who knows...
Ah well. Beagle seems to be pretty well tied down, but it's too bad MSNBC can't buy some kind of exclusive first coverage for the NASA Mars data that will be coming from the rovers...
all the best -
