This is interesting in that it argues for large-scale aqueous weathering on Mars.
I appears that the more spacecraft we send to Mars, Mariner, Viking, Mars Global Surveyor, the more we realize the effects of water on the Red Planet.

What will Mars Odyssey tell us?
