I happen to think it was a minor miracle he found Le Bourget. Or Paris. Or could tell what it was when he got there. I always found airports hard to find in planes without electrical systems.
Last evening I was walking the dog and listening to a Walkman. For some reason I noticed that at 7:00 PM the announcer for the station to which I was listening missed the half-hour station and city announcement.
(I don't even know if those are required any more, but it used to be in the US every radio station had to transmit it's call letters, city of origin and time every half hour on the half hour.)
Noticing it was missing, I happened to think of the reasons for it. I was always told that was so airplanes could navigate if they had a directional antenna, and I dawned on me how far flying has come. And I'm absolutely sure there was no pilot lost or straying who stayed lost or straying because of that radio station missing it's ID on the break.
Who would have thought such marvelous inertial navigational systems and then GPSs would enable folks to tell exactly where they were at all times relatively easily. Especially since clocks good enough to use for navigation aren't all that old, either.
Amazing!!
