Soil Structures of Mars?

Alex, Nick and others in the know, I'm looking for opinions of the constancy of the possible permafrost and overlaying regolith. Would it be an easily dug loose structure or closer to concrete. Could you suggest some sources for more information on the soil structures of Mars.
