"Sensible goal! But I wonder if anyone will pay atttention to your idea?"
Not my idea, not my goal. I simply read the article & posted here so others might also read it.
I also put 1991 VG into those orbit java applet thingys and fast forwarded to find when it would be close (to check out how & whether what this Durda person said was true).
Also in past posts regarding going to NEOs, I said one problem with going to a NEO with crew is was duration and tight launch window- this rock doesn't have this problem- it will be fairly close to Earth for about 3 years {continously} . [I did say that it's very probable that we could find a rock which could remain close enough- this rock is better in that regard then I expected & it has known about since 1991 (but I didn't know of it).]
The only real problem with 1991 VG is it's next window for crew mission begins around 2016- though for robotic exploration there isn't this restriction. Now, of course we will find other rocks which could comparable to this one- perhaps significantly better in some respects.
All this doesn't change my idea about NASA exploring the Moon in order to determine if there is minable deposit of water: start program now & be done within 5 years. If NASA is stupid enough to wait another 6-7 years before going to the Moon, then this particular rock would work as what NASA does after going to the Moon and just before going to Mars.
