Here are a couple sites:
Make your own ethanol
Biodiesel recipe
If I had a small diesel motor it would burn biodiesel by default without modifications, that is if I could make my own fuel. Trouble is making biodiesel seems to require methanol, which may or may not be a renewable substance, and which is hazardous. It also requires sodium hydroxide which is hazardous. But if you've got the gear, might as well go for it.
Making ethanol requires a still, and you have to get a license from the Bureau for Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms. Stills need distilled water, and consume energy (heat). Further you can make biodiesel out of ethanol but it requires potassium hydroxide (toxic).
Actually, making hydrogen by electrolysis requires KOH too, so there is no getting around the toxic stuff I guess. I am not a chemist, and it seems complicated making sure everything is done properly, and it doesn't really seem like the fuels are truely renewable. I am also kind of wondering if toxic waste products are produced by these processes?
Are renewable fuels actually non-renewable and toxic?
