OK! So PBS is mostly a liberal
or even a pinko broadscast network.
So what??!!!
Yesterday,I gleefully took in the two-hour PBS NOVA special on the APOLLO moon program.
If you knew it was on and didn't watch it, you aren't a genuine space enthusiast.
IT WAS AWESOME!! IT WAS ABSOLUTELY INSPIRING!
I learned things about the Apollo & Gemini programs that I hadn't known before.
EX: Gemini IX mission almost came to disaster during the EVA, as Eugene Cernan came dangerously close to heat prostration or worse during an EVA that was mercifully cut short to about 2 1/2 hours. Eugene's heart rate reached dangerously high levels during the EVA.
He suffered extreme dehydration, too.
If Eugene had succumbed to those extreme physical effects during the EVA, Thomas Stafford would not have been able to....draw the body of Eugene back into the capsule, back into his seat and close both hatches.
Eugene had been given prior secret orders by NASA astronaut-head, Deke Slayton, to attempt a reentry alone in such a circumstance with Eugene's body still tethered to the ship...
Thomas Stafford
found that idea foolhardy and told Deke
he would "cut Eugene's oxygen tube"
instead, leaving his body to orbit the earth if that terrible possibility
happened.
I learned from the show that in 1961, nearly all of NASA's top officials were persuaded that "Earth-Orbit Rendezvous" technique was the way to go to the moon.
It took the persistance of one man to show that Lunar-Orbit Rendezvous technique was the proper way to go to meet Kennedy's deadline of 1969.
He succeeded in persuading NASA.
I also learned that Dr. Eugene Shoemaker almost singlehandedly made
Lunar Geology a "respectable branch of science" at the USGS.

I feel sorry for you all if you missed yesterday's PBS NOVA special.
