An omnivorous car would survive a shortage of a particular type of fuel. That way, people and business would not have to buy new equipment before the expected operational lifetime had expired. I think however that all cars should be able to burn at least one type of renewable fuel (hydrogen, ethanol, or biodiesel) in addition to the conventional fossil fuel.
