I see this stuff - - -

And wish it could come true.

With half of the people in the world never having even made a telephone call, there seems to be an enormous technological gap. And those people will consume more and more of the worlds resources without contributing much for a while.

To do these things is a bit like designing the genetically grown organs and other cures. It takes a complete infrastructure, labs, researchers, workers, Ph. D.s and so on. They just aren't there right now, just a few folks on the cutting edge. The infrastructure has to be built - universities teaching the appropriate under- and graduate stuff, companies for them to work in, and so on.

It would take another entire infrastructure to start the nanotechnology industry. Could be done, please don't misunderstand me, it was done for computers and software, but would take time and resources.

Computers started making money right away, there was an industry waiting for them. Nanotechnology would have to come up with some nifty products almost immediately for there to be the enormous entreprenural investment required.

With globalization, and a general modification of the realities of the world, creating that infrastructure for nanotechnology and genetic tissue and organ generation seems less and less likely unless it can be driven by profits from early successes.
