On the visible image page it says:
1st Manned Lunar Landing and 1st Robotic Mars Landing Commerative Release: Viking 1 Landing Site in Chryse Planitia - Visible Image (Released 20 July 2002).
"This 4 framelet image is part of a 5 band image sequence. This image primarily contains plains, wrinkle ridges and craters."

As far as I know this is the first time on one of the visible image releases where it said it was taken in more than one band. This seems to indicte they have the capability to form a color image of this location. But the image was released in B/W.
Have they combined the 5 band images into a single color image?
