Hoagland claims THEMIS coverup.

See the story on Alan Boyle's site:

More Mars mysteries:
"The most prominent boosters of Martian enigmas such as the “Face on Mars” have produced photos that they say provide evidence of mysterious buried city-style structures on the Red Planet — but the origins of the photos turn out to be just as murky a mystery."

Hoagland claims the multispectral infrared image of Cydonia released to the public was "doctored" by someone at ASU to degrade the quality.
He says the real image shows square shaped artifacts in Cydonia.
THEMIS PI Philip Christensen argues that this image that Hoagland's team is using is the one that is altered.
Keith Laney who works with NASA on processing the MER landing site images is the one who did the image processing for Hoagland.
It's hard to understand why Laney would take the stance that his image is unaltered when the raw data will be released in November and it will be easy to see which is the unaltered image.
On the other hand Noel Gorelick who manages the image processing at ASU made an extraordinarily ill-advised statement on the Enterprise Mission chat board about the officially released image:

"The daily images web site is a service I provide and support entirely because I'm a nice guy. There is no NASA mandate or contractual requirement for me to provide these images to anyone before they're delivered to the PDS. I do so because the public is interested in what's going on with the mission, and it's good for public relations. Accordingly, if I feel like degrading the data before I post it, I'm certainly free to do so. If I want to scribble on the images with a crayon before posting them to my web site, I'm probably free to do that too. The "government data" that the public paid for is being well cared for while it's being prepared for delivery to the PDS."

Even if he or someone at ASU did not intentionally degrade the Cydonia image, it is extremely poor public relations to suggest he could do so with impugnity - and this on a site that argues NASA is holding back data!

Hoagland's claims about the artificiality in the real THEMIS Cydonia image are given on his web site:

This site has been highly congested of late. It may easier to download the images and a press release from Art Bells web site:
