You’re correct, that is not the answer I’m looking for. I have known they stopped painting it since 1982 when STS-3 was launched, and we saw the orange tank. The color change I see is from the orange to yellow. I sent in a question to NASA’s ask the experts. I have not yet seen a reply on their web site.
