The Liberal Catholic vote, for one, which is enormous. There's a lot of blue collar Democrats out there who are not so doctrinaire as to forbid abortion rights to others, but who will resent having them forced on them. And I sympathize with them.
The issue is more complex than I have alluded to, for example, many states already have regs that do pretty much what the Dems are now proposing and no one's ever mentioned that, even Romney's Massachusetts Health Plan had a similar provision.
But its not the votes so much I'm concerned about, I really do believe it's constitutionally suspect, and unfair to religious sensibilities, particularly those who have not insisted on pushing their morality on others.
I'll be glad to hear any arguments you may have to show I'm wrong about this. I'd hate to see an issue like this cost Obama the election, especially since if his opponents win, all abortion, contraception, and family and women's medicine will come under immediate and ruthless fundowacko attack.
