By coincidence Farmer was the key-note speaker at breakfast the next day.
He pretty much gave Nick's talk about Mars, but substituted H2O for CO2 throughout the his talk.
I was able to get one of his colleagues to talk a bit about a big paper coming out very soon that supposedly demonstrates the wet Mars pov convincingly, but when pressed for details, she said if she told me she would have to kill me.
Cal Tech is totally cool. A tiny MIT with much better landscaping and weather.

Perhaps it had to do with this:
Title: Volcano-Ice Interactions and the Exploration for Extant Martian Life
Authors: Payne, M. C.; Farmer, J. D.
Journal: American Geophysical Union, Fall Meeting 2001, abstract #P22B-0549
Publication Date: 12/2001
http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/bib_query?2001AGUFM.P22B0549P
It's described on this page:
Life On Mars: Swimming Right Under the Surface?
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/solarsystem/glacial_volcanoes_010724-1.html
If she says they have proved this hypothesis (and assuming this is Payne) I would guess this means they have convincing evidence for volcano ice interactions at the north pole on Mars.

Upcoming paper on water on Mars.
