It is not surprising that they lied. When every little effort was a competition between ideologies - stretching successes became par for the course.

It easy to wax nostalgic for a competitor who keeps spurring you forward to keep up or be "buried".

I hope the Chinese get their act together quickly. However, they have no direct competition right now, only past accomplishments of a dead superpower and a superpower resting on its technological laurels (though that is changing.) Hardly the "dog eat dog" world of the late 50's early 60's.
