There is some debate about what constitutes artificial intelligence.

If a human clerical worker sorts a bunch of files in alphabetical order, we'd generally agree that the worker is applying intelligence to the job. On the other hand, if a computer algorithm does the same thing, no one says intelligence is involved.

Things like this are part of an on-going debate about what constitutes intelligence. In broad terms, some computer systems (most often employing neural networks) can learn how to do tasks. Some of these tasks can be pretty complicated, such as reading a mammogram for signs of cancer. Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute has even taught a computer to drive a car visually, a very impressive bit of computer development featuring a No Hands Across America road trip 3000 miles long.
