Planting 10,000 acres of corn (or other biomass) will provide 30 million liters of ethanol annually, with a street value of $10 million if mixed with 15% gasoline, or if left pure will earn the gov't US $660 million in liquor tax revenue, based on the US $22/liter tax imposed by Bureau of Tobacco, Alcohol & Firearms. Planting 10,000 acres of corn will cost you CAN $3.76 million (including cost of land).
Installing 10,000 acres of photovoltaics will cost CAN ~$100 billion (cost of land negligible).
When the land runs out, let's use ocean biomass. Selective breeding may be possible to produce a high-cellulose seaweed that yields ethanol in equivalent quantities to corn, and at the same time requires minimal infrastructure. And seaweed floats, so it can be grown on the deep ocean, waaaaay offshore if necessary.
Currently seaweed is cultivated in asia for food, not fuel.
