Compatability issues

If you've been working with computers for a while, you'll find yourself with old software. I have disks at home dating from the early 1980s. Some of the disks are the old 5.25" format floppies and some are old 3.5" disks.

Even if I pulled an old 5.25" floppy out of a box (I have one or two), dusted it off, and installed it in my computer, could I use any of that old software? Perhaps, but probably not in most cases.

File formats evolve over time and often become obsolete. Today's hot format will be tomorrow's dinosaur. Will we be able to open JPEG and MPEG files 30 years from now? Perhaps, but I wouldn't bet on it.
