Standard satellite buses have been in use for a long time

Hughes has launched many satellites using their standard HS-601 and HS-701 buses. Before that, they had a standard bus for a 2-axis satellite. I think the designation was HS-396 or something like that.

Using a standard bus for interplanetary missions makes a lot of sense, but it really isn't all that different from doing the same thing for satellites.
