As Gene, Jack and Ron were on their way to the Moon, exactly 30 years ago, today, I'd like to share something Jack told us last june at the conference in Delft. He did not believe in the current Moon formation theory.
(That's because, apparently, there is too much differenciation inside the Moon to explain how millions of rocks could have reassembled to form the Moon; in that case, there wouldn't be differenciation).
I believe he said he wasn't favoring one theory over another but only that the current one didn't convince him.
But how about this?
The capture theory was dismissed because a heavenly body can't just slow down (without an engine and put itself in orbit around another heavenly body!
Since then, SL9 was discovered around Jupiter (a captured comet) and the SIVB stage of Apollo 12 came back to Earth orbit from a solar orbit......How? THROUGH THE L1 GATE!!!
The Earth-Sun L1 point can attract bodies formerly in a Solar orbit. If both the Moon and the Earth were formed close together, they would likely have the same kind of matter and one day, the Moon could have approached the L1 point (after the collision that formed what we call the Aitken Basin or the Mare Orientale....Just an opinion, nothing serious...
