Space/Science » in reply to Surprise Comet Streaks Into Solar System - National Geographic News

I noticed an astronomy error.

Actually, it was probably a NGM news-reporting error.
How many journalists have taken astronomy?
The error?...
ex: "Bright as Venus; Magnitude of 4."

[correct astronomy]
When celestial objects are dimmer than 0 magnitude, they have positive values. When celestial objects are brighter than 0 magnitude, they have negative values...[Venus has a variable magnitude, but it does get to -4 magnitude and even brighter.

Will this NEWLY DISCOVERED comet get to -4 magnitude?
Doubtful. Hale-Bopp didn't...I think it got as bright as -1 magnitude
[about that of Jupiter or Sirius]
cheers.
