Reminds me of a great story in readers digest about a young F4 Phantom pilot.
He wanted to get his "mach 2 pin" before modifications were done to the planes in his unit that would prevent them from reaching mach 2.
He takes his plane up to some un-Godly altitude and puts it in a dive. At some point before mach 2, both engines "Wonk" out. Long story short, he managed to pull out of the dive and got the engines started again.
On the ground he "met" with the crew chief and they poured over the specs of the plane and determined that the angle of his dive was few degrees past the operational limit.
The engines couldn't handle the volume of air and were blown out like a candle!
