I understand that a distinct double sonic boom was expected during this phase of the flight. I don't know how loud this would have been. I would imagine the multiple sonic shocks generated by hundreds of large chunks at the same time could easily mimic the "roar" or loud explosive rumble that many reported, but I'm no expert in this area.
