It just occurred to me, Tom!
Doesn't it make sense to view one facet
of space-exploration as an "extension" of the media?
What is the most common quote attributed to newspaper editors, etc?
Isn't it, "The public has a right to know!"?...True enough!
The public also "has the right to know"
what's going on out there....out there
in the cosmos.
Telescopes and robotic planetary probes are in effect "space reporters", so were the Apollo lunar astronauts.
Human beings are curious! Every
reporter/journalist/editor knows that!
In fact, that's why newspapers, TV news,
radio news ,etc., exists.
And I'm sure Alan Boyle will agree
that the foundation principles of the media and all news-outlets are the questions "What?", "Why?", "Where?", and "When?".
Space-exploration is fundamentally
based on the same principles.
Space exploration is actually an extension of the news media.
