Thanks for the answers here. I thought that I remembered this re-entry profile along with the shuttle operational cross range requirement, but I guess the brain will play tricks on you with age... oh well
It is clear that the mission controllers had no idea that anything was seriously wrong -
my assumption is that the normal check of the pad area was undertaken after launch to check for debris, but as usual, it does not pay to assume to much -
