The Starfire facility is located in New Mexico. Any Starfire images could go a long way to identifying the structural damage before breakup.
I don't know if any of the Maui telescopes took images of Columbia while it was in orbit. The inclination of this mission probably would've limited imaging opportunities. I'm not certain but I don't think Columbia was anywhere near Maui during the reentry.
Back in 1991, I got to see what some of those telescopes in Maui could do. I was shown a videotape of the Shuttle flying overhead at least 200 miles high. The picture was as clear as if the thing was only a few thousand feet overhead. Starfire has even better resolution and the Shuttle was a lot lower, so the pictures should show a lot more detail.
