The method so far has a stand alone camera behind the garment whose imaging is projected onto the front of the garment.
When perfected the camera(s) will be imbedded into the garment so that the view from all angles will consist of a projected (or digitally recreated) image of what is behind the garment.
I thought a similar idea of how it could be done would be to have millions of microscopic fiber-optic cables imbedded in the cloak so that light entering at one place would be carried around to the other side, giving the impression that you are viewing what is on the other side of the cloak.
Of course the method in science-fiction would be to use gravitational engineering to curve space around the cloaked object so that you only see what is behind it. This is far beyond our current technology but something analogous might work: Engineer a material with a variable refractive index such that light from behind is bent to emerge in the front.
