I always wondered how Omega = 1 could be so. And then unexpectedly, Dark Energy came along giving us a flat yet accelerating universe. The big surprise to our 90s generation was the 2nd derivative, the rate of expansion increasing. Maybe future universe models will address if there could ever be a phase state change where the increasing rate of expansion might be reversed. Looks unlikely.
