Greg, there is no debate about the spider formations being raised above the ground.
The question is about the individual "branches". From the direction of illumination these are depressions, indicating they are cut channels.
As to why the spirer formations would be raised above the ground, I don't know. Perhaps they are analogous to pingoes.
