Its probably more complex than a single gene. What we can probably do, though, is fiddle with the genetics of that tree and make it grow faster and in a wider array of climates. We have already done things like this with Evergreen species... In fact the logging industry likes to throw down a lot of these gene-manipulated genetically-identical evergreen seedlings and call the forest 'restored'.... Maybe we'll just convince them to pulll the same BS using this species instead.
Ahh, but the enviros would never let us do this... Isn't it all so absurd?
