The AP Story that caused all the hoopla

The Boston Globe's version, most others were similar.
http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/073/nation/Mars_radiation_would_endanger_astronauts_NASA_scientists_sayP.shtml

What I want to know is whether there was anything in the announcement event that led the writer to believe that NASA believed the radiation environment was so dreadful?

The MARIE "correction" essentially backs up the AP's report of results, not conclusions. Is the radiation environment an "extreme" hazard for astronauts? No more so than most other space environments. But a quick reading of the MARIE information on their own site sure looks and sounds "sensational" -- hazards everywhere, and we are all doomed (sooner or later). Mars is lethal!!!

So I'm disinclined to dump on the AP writer too much at this time.

Cheers, BFelix
