It may not use tape
Many flight data recorders have gone to solid state memory instead of tape. Solid state is a lot more reliable and rugged than tape, requires less maintenance, and allows for a lot more data to be collected. I don't know about this unit, but it looks to be in pretty good shape. Let's hope they can recover the data.
