This is being posted here on the SPACE
topics page, instead of CURRRENT EVENTS, because Iraqi Al-Abbas
missiles [the largest in their inventory]
pass through "space'" on their way to their target...
Al-Abbas missiles are larger than SCUDS, and can reach a range of 550-600 miles, clearly out-performing the SCUD missiles.
550-600 miles will allow the Al-Abbas to reach Greece, and maybe
Bulgaria...barely.
BUT!...Put a shorter-range, smaller Al-Samoud missile [which you've recently heard so much about] on top
as a "second-stage", and guess what?
...The two-stage missile combo can
reach Western Europe with a 250-500Ib
chemical or bio-warhead.
Do the numbers yourself!
I estimate the Al-Abbas has
a mass-ratio that's close to 5.0, fully fueled [a fair assumption I think, considering its range]. An exhaust velocity from it's hyperogolic propellants at S.L. would be around 5,500mph.
And the Al-Samoud is from
the diagrams in NEWSWEEK 1/2 shorter
and 1/2 thinner than the Al-Abbas...I would be safe to claim
that the smaller rocket is 1/8th the mass
of the bigger rocket.
I've done some calculating: A two-stage
missile combo would have a possible
terminal velocity of near 13,000 mph
[almost 4 times that of the Nazi V2].
That means a range estimate of 3,000
miles is possible...easily enough to hit London, England from Iraq.

Related indirectly to the post below, could Iraq threaten Western Europe now with missiles?
