I absolutely love it when the macrocosm informs the microcosm. One of the things that made me decide to cease going on in academia was the sheer frustration of the 'specialization' effect, where you have to choose early to track off 20 years of your intellectual life if you are going to make a non-trivial contribution. (Plus, the things I was really interested in were the things I was not as good at as the things I was not interested in- if that even parses...).
