But, Dr. Lafon...

<You taught us that magnetic fields do no work. If the magnetic field were slowing the magnet then it would be doing work, right?

Addendum my explanation will he? ;)

I always liked the jumping ring experiment. For those who aren't familliar with it, it uses an electromagnet to make a conductive ring jump due to basically the same effect as the magnet through the conductive tube.

My Electrical Engineering friend and I did a summer camp like workshop with 3-4-5th graders on space exploration stuff.

One day we we're talking about comets and asteriods and I borrowed the jumping ring experiment from the Physics Dept. to help illustrate the idea of asteroid deflection with mass drivers.

After the class we had some time to play with it before we had to take it back and so I decided to get a feel for just how much force was being applied to the ring by holding it down with my hand. That little copper ring went from zero to hot much faster than my reaction time, elegantly illustratrating another physical phenomea fundamental to this phenomea, resistance.
