If a company were to begin manufacturing advanced space shuttles (shuttle IIs), and could get the go ahead to sell them like Boeing does it's large jets, how big of a global market would there be for them? By manufacturing them on an assembly line, the cost could probably be brought down to $500 million to $1 billion each. I'm sure that Germany, Britain, Japan, China, India and other wealthy countries, would line up to buy a few such vehicles instead of developing and building similar vehicles themselves.
After the market became saturated with orbiters, the manufacturing could be switched over to parts production to keep the vehicles flight worthy. This would also allow for the ability to build more in the future to be maintained. It may be a crazy idea, the government would never allow for the export of such technology, but it would definitely open up space to a wide range of competition.
If we could sell shuttle like airliners, would there be a market?
