"Mapping Mars" -- suggested reading (attention: Mark Eby, too)
I do remember that issue. My parents subscribed to Life until its demise.
Fortunately, the images are slowly being compiled into more durable trade formats. The magazines are important historical documents, but fragile.
I wondered if anyone here has heard of or read the book Mapping Mars by Oliver Morton. We got it recently -- I stuck it in YA, which strictly speaking it isn't, but it's the closest I can get to "general audience". I have found it fascinating, especially the way Morton brings the worlds of science and science fiction together to show the evolution of Mars's hold on our imagination. It also received a very good review in Science Books and Films.
