Scientific America has a good article on parallel universes

Check out Scientific America’s article on parallel universes. A very interesting read.

I wrote this a while back for the MSNBC Space board

For every possibility there is a parallel universe?

I was thinking about this on a very basic level.

I see time as on the position of matter at any given moment in relation to a fixed point. To make it simple I keep it on the atomic level and assign every atom with it own unique number (or unique identify). Then I lay a three dimensional grid over the whole universe (Or just imagine the Earth). With this we can follow the path of every atom as ‘time’ passes. Stop each atom at a specific moment and you have a moment in time. What does this have to do with different possibilities? I put it on my same model of time and I get this.

You can get every possibility by arraigning matter so that every atom occupies every coordinate in every way possible. Just trying to comprehend the numbers is staggering, so lets make it simple. Imagine the universe having only ten coordinates and 10 atoms, you would only have 100 possibilities for that universe, or 100 parallel universes.
