Well, Chris, it's true the original seven got the limelight and fame and the first flights, but IMO the next astronaut selection was much more interesting and remains so to this day.
Mc Divitt: cdr of Gemini 4, cdr of Apollo 9 (first Gemini long flight, first LM test.
White: first US EVA (Gemini 4) deceased with Apollo 1.
See: deceased before his flight.
Armstrong: Gemini 8 (first docking in space; first emergency) Apollo 11: first man on the Moon.
Stafford: Gemini 6 first rendez-vous in space; Gemini 9: Gemini 10 (Cdr of the first LM test around the Moon) ASTP (docking with a Soyuz)
Borman (cdr of the longest manned flight for years) Gemini 7, Apollo 8 (cdr of the first flight to the Moon)
Lovell: Gemini 7, 12 (last Gemini flight) Apollo 8 , 13 (emergency to the Moon)
Conrad: Gemini 5, 11 (highest flight in Earth orbit), 12 (2nd to the Moon) Skylab (1st crew to the first US station; repair of the station).
Young Gemini 3 (first trajectory corrections in space) Gemini 10: (2 rendez-vous in space); Apollo 10 (CMP); Apollo 16: (on the Moon; the only original 9 to perform a J flight); STS1 first Shuttle flight; STS9: first international Shuttle-Spacelab flight.
4 went 4 times to space;1 went 6 times; 6 went to the Moon; 3 landed on the moon!
Gemini was a huge evolution in manned space program! Apollo inspired the world.
