I took it that the creatures weren't native to the planet. Considering that everything was gone, no plants, animals or anything. Only the bones of some very large animals that appeared to have been dead a very long time. To me these creatures seemed to be some sort of locusts, stripping away anything of nutritional value, except for the glow worms.
