Workshop on Earth Analogs for the Human Exploration of Moon and Mars

"Workshop on Analog Sites and Facilities for the Human Exploration of the Moon and Mars"

When: May 21-23, 2003

Where: Colorado School of Mines
1500 Illinois St. Golden, Colorado 80401

Goals and Objectives: The scientific community has a long tradition of seeking and using terrestrial analog sites for planetary features to better understand the features and to develop strategies for and train scientists involved in planetary exploration. The human exploration community has used terrestrial analog sites and facilities as testing grounds for technologies and for training astronauts for planetary exploration. A workshop will be convened at the Colorado School of Mines, May 21-23, 2003, to explore the commonalities between these two uses of analog sites and facilities and to evaluate the characteristics of analogs that could best serve both uses. The workshop is supported by NASA's Human Exploration and Development of Space Enterprise and sponsored by USRA's RIACS, the Lunar & Planetary Institute and the Colorado School of Mines.

The overall goal of the Workshop is to contribute to the development of a strategy for integrating scientific considerations into human exploration through analog activities on Earth. The focus will be on the exploration of Mars; however, discussion of topics relevant to lunar exploration will also be considered, in particular, those dealing with the preparation of astronauts and systems for human activities on the Moon.

Cost: Registration fee of $200 (before May 9) or $225 (after May 9).
