Regardless of all the Astrology crap, you *know* that there are 12 constellations in the zodiac. Then it becomes a geometrical question of estimating the average solid angle of a constellation (30 degrees of arc, square) and extrapolating to the full celestial sphere.

(And I remembered 88, anyway, but it is the only possible answer).
