Artifacts would be much cooler than even the coolest stars, but much warmer than most gases, rocks, etc. By simultaneously giving you IR fluxes at four separate wavelengths, you could fit the points to a black-body curve and get the temperature.
I do grant you a nearby star would tend to drown out any signal you might be interested in.
