Flying cars have been a dream for many for a long time. Only two designs have ever been certified by the FAA and neither was put into mass production. This article tells why.
The Molt Taylor Aerocar is the design I know most about. In the end, only 5 were ever built. The Model Is were homely little beasts, while the Model II was used to refine the aerodynamics of the concept. The best of the bunch was the Model III. It looked a bit like an Opel GT with wings. Only one Model III was ever built.
The man who runs Aerocar.com lives not too far from me. He owns 2 of the 5 Aerocars, a Model I and the only Model II. He was supposed to fly the Model I yesterday at a local airshow, but I didn't see it. From what I've heard, he has flown it recently but it just doesn't do well at our altitude. He's working on a next generation flying car as shown on his webpage. I've talked to him (his hangar is near mine) but don't know of his progress. He has some serious toys, so he must have some money to put into the project.
